During the 1920s the US Marine Corps got the billet of defending the Postal Service from mail theft. This included guarding post offices, railways, mail trucks, strategic postal routes, and by all accounts the marines did it extremely effectively under Smedley Butler. The marine guards would be withdrawn in 1927 when they were deployed abroad.

I'm reminded of the Secret Service which got dragooned into protecting the president when they mostly just wanted to investigate counterfeit currency.

Would there be any effects at all if the association with the Postal Service remained as part of marine duties?
