WI: Margaret Thatcher remains Prime Minister in 1992. Do Conservatives win in '92?

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher does not resign in November 1990, and remains the Conservative Party Leader as well as Prime Minister. Do Conservatives win again with Thatcher at the helm, or do they lose due to her unpopularity?

Conservative loose in 1992. If you look at the response to the Poll Tax and the infamous Mid Staffordshire by-Election, if Thatcher survived a Leadership Election, without a shadow of a doubt she's out in 1992.

People don't give enough credit to John Major's and Chris Patten's Campaign in '92; without the kind of desperate energy you had from Major, who was young and able to throw himself completely into it, and with Thatcher likely surrounded by yes-men who assured her she was going survive whilst preparing themselves for the loss, the best the Tories can hope for it Kinnock to fail to get over the line, and get into a Coalition with Ashdown and the Lib Dems.

Her remaining in power would lead to a hung parliament with Labour under Neil Kinnock and the Liberal Democrats under Paddy Ashdown.

I could see Thatcher refusing to quit in '92, and staying on until 1997 or 2001.

Yeah, the Tory majority in '92 was due in large part to the public wanting to give Major a chance. Thatcher was seen as tired by the end of the 80s and would no doubt have lost the '92 election.

This. I voted Tory in `87 (which was the first time I could vote) but wouldn't have voted for them in `92 in Thatcher had been still leader. Was prepared to give Major a chance though.
