WI: Mao killed in shanghai

I was Reading Mao the Unknown story, and i discovered that he was nearly killed in the First Phase of the CCW.

WI he was?

My first Q is if there's anyone else in the Chinese Communist insurgerncy with the will and charisma to take the helm, and if who what were they like? Assuming they still win over Chang:

Deng Xiaoping? That'd be big: a much more open market China, Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward averted, China as economic superpower decades earlier!?!

Hua Guofeng? That'd be Mao 2.0 from what I can scrape from wiki.

Zhao Ziyang? Somewhere in the middle?

Any China Experts here have an informed opinion?

That's one hell of an assumption right there. It's quite possible that without Mao the CCP wouldn't have taken over in the first place.

And I'd appreciate if people started spelling Jiang correctly. If you must absolutely use the Wade-Giles transliteration, it's Chiang, with an i.

Geez, sorry I don't meet your exacting standards.

And BTW the "Chang" was a mis-type, not an ignorant error.

Zhou En-Lai (Chou in the old translation) was Mao's second through mush of the revolution, right up to his death. Pragmatic, urbane, smart as hell, not quite as charismatic. He might have been an early Deng, or even better.

Lin Piao and a few others of the old guard are around too. I'll defer to Hendryk or another Sinophile for details on them.
