WI: Manitoba forgot to warn the US about If Day?

If Day was a 1942 simulated Nazi invasion of Manitoba (especially Winnipeg) with reservists, volunteers, trainees, and others dressed as Nazis faking an invasion in a fund raising drive. As part of it Manitoba radio stations were broadcasting fake Nazi propaganda and Hitler speeches.

Now OTL they warned the American border towns of what was being planned. Let's say that for whatever reason the warnings aren't as clear, some get lost in the mail, and whatnot so most of the Americans living near the border don't know what's happening (not totally plausible, but I've seen bigger things handwaved). How badly could they panic?

I imagine it might basically be something akin to the Battle of Los Angeles with actual casualties. But it isn't anything that will have much of an impact, except for being remembered as one of those quirky war-hysteria-induced events.

The citizens of the border regions would probably freak the fuck out and the military authorities would know what is going on quick enough to defuse any panic that could cause casualties.

Orson Welles has to interrupt making "Batman" to testify in front of Congress he had nothing to do with it.:p

The Nazi-Canadian's will surrender imminently on seeing American troops. Canadian Government will be pissed, and relations will be a bit icier, although given the situation they'll still work together. Might play into the propaganda aspect of If Day by showing how America will be able to march in and restore order.
