WI Malcolm X supplants MLK?

Spinoff from the King thread: Let's say Malcolm survives the assassination. While he was in favour of black economic development (which led some Dem and GOP pols to reach out to him), even period accounts describe his early philosophy as "black apartheid".

Well...wasn't he moving towards a more "moderate" position when he got shot? (which incidentally was possibly a reason for him to get shot) At least, that's what the "auto"biography claims. If so, perhaps he and King meet up in terms of overall goals in a few years. Actually, I think they'd make a pretty good team; Malcom scares the hell out of everyone, King comes in and offers a "reasonable" compromise. Playing with the Overton window a few decades before anyone figured it out OTL.

He admitted as much to King privately before his death. Being the big black bugbear made it easier for King to seem "reasonable" to the establishment. So they'd negotiate with King in order to hopefully keep Malcolm X from gaining any more favor
