Just another very imaginative WI scenario from GH...
But what if Ghandi, instead of appealing to Indian poor to support his indepence movement of non-violence, instead first/only went to the Maharajas of India (the ruling noble classes)
They were the closest to the Brits, in terms of governing-interconnectedness and thus could be a strong place start a subterfuge against British rule.
Also, like Ghandi, the vast amount were British educated and spoke the kings English. Indeed, they would all respect his law degree credentials
*************
Would an Indian independence movement be successful spearhead by the royal houses in India?
Would India achieve independence faster?
Could Ghandi, and his family, receive Maharajas titles themselves?
What would a Maharaja lead India, post-independence look like?
My Thoughts: I think Gandhi would still achieve independence, in more bloodless way and he would be royally chosen as head of state of a unified Indian constitutional monarchy.
