Wi Maggie Survives the Brighton Bombing-but Denis Doesn't?

Hi all,

The subject of a successful Thatcher assassination at the conservative party conference has been discussed on here a couple of times, but I don't think this possibility has.

So what if, the IRA fail to assassinate Margaret Thatcher, but the bomb kills Denis, along with it's other casualties?

How does the untimely death of her husband affect the rest of Thatcher's premiership?

"My name is Margaret Thatcher. You killed my husband, prepare to die..."

I expected someone to say something like that! But what would Thatcher spacifically do with regards to the IRA after the assassination? Innicially, she'd get a great deal of sympathy, how long this lasts is another thing.

Thatcher did say she couldn't have been PM for as long without Denis's support though. Is this true? Does this shorten or extend her time in office?

I half wonder if she'd resign right away. Denis Thatcher really was a rock to his wife, and without his support, I think she'd be very badly shaken. So, I'd say, with Denis a martyr to the cause, Thatcher resigns, and her successor (Heseltine? Howe?) moves in to pursue a very Thatcherite agenda. The NI peace process is probably, in the long term, delayed by a couple of years, but not too much more than that.

Thatcher remains active on the back benches for another term or two, and urges a "no surrender" agenda on her successor.

Perhaps, but it could possibly have the result that she throws herself even deeper into her work as she has nothing else left. Unfortunately, she would probably face emotional trauma and depression on leaving office in this scenario.

I did wonder whether she'd have resigned straight away, but I think that's probably unlikely-she'd be all the more determined to deal with the IRA and being PM means she has greater influence over polecy towards Ireland. I also think she'd try and remain for as long as possible, if anything as a way of keeping herself busy-could be wrong there though.

The Minors strike may play out differently though-she'd be pretty heavily focussed on Northern Ireland and the issue with the Minors may be left to other ministers by default.

shd probaly bomb ireland back to the stone age...mabye try and bring back the entire island under british rule...least one thing she might do, realistically though its hard to say what wouldve happened, without changing her personality or making her out like even worse a bitch than she kinda was

This is nonsensical.
