WI: Madeira under Spanish rule

Inspired by Portuguese-controlled Canaries thread, I wonder what could happen if Madeira was colonized by Spain instead of Portugal, considering the fact that on the south of the island are the Canarian archipelago.

Will it become a separate part of Spain or just another cabildo of Canarias?

It probably would be in par with Tenerife and Gran Canaria in administrative rank. Now, wether nowadays it would be a totally separate unit or integrated as province inside the Autonmous Community of Canarias is difficult to say.

Isn't it too far away from the archipelago to really be a part of the Canary Islands community?

You mean colonized. The archipelago had no native population.

Madeira is big enough on its own right and far enough from the Canaries to merit its own government. Envisioning Madeira and Porto Santo treated as just 2 extra outlying Canarian islands is an interesting thought, though.

Well, it obviously wouldn't be "The Canary Islands", but is not unlikelly to have some sort of common atlantic administrative entity to both of them.
