WI: MacArthur killed during Operation Downfall

Quick question:

Say the Kjujo coup succeeds and the U.S. goes forward with Operation Downfall. If General MacArthur were to be killed at some point during the operation, say by a kamikaze attack on his headquarters, does Admiral Nimitz automatically take over as Supreme Commander? Or do they bring in someone else like Bradley from Europe?

Yes, Nimitz would take over as he was the next most senior 5 Star. He was appointed to 5 Star rank the day before Eisenhower and two days before Arnold.

I'm wondering the effect this would have on trying to rebuild Japan since MacArthur has a pretty good udnerstanding of how the culture worked...

Many of the Japanese begin to lose their faith in the Emperor after the Gaijin Shogun is killed. Soon, their appreciation for MacArthur is elevated to an extent where a de facto religion is created praising him as the God of War. Southern Japan becomes a theocracy praising MacArthur and they kick the commies out in the name of the Gaijin Shogun. The Japanese Empire is finally reborn under Eternal Emperor MacArthur inspiring them to invade Vietnam, Red China, and the Soviet Union to destroy the red devils of the face of the earth.

Sorry bout that. Anyways, the world wouldn't be that different without him. After all, we was a pretty clumsy strategist when it came to war and for all we know, the Korean Conflict might not even happen ITTL.
