OK, so I don't know much about MacArthur beyond the received Hollywood facts- prima donna, egotistical maniac, flashes of brilliance, stretches of bumbling, violated chain of command protocols in Korea- and I know especially little about the Philippines campaign.
But in several threads on this board recently I've seen references to MacArthur losing the islands when they could have been held.

So, to further my education, O canniest of counter-factual scholars, tell me what would happen if MacArthur had died in an accident some time in 1941. I realise that there would be all manner of butterflies and what have you, but basically I want to know who would have replaced him and how they could have done better.

About the only thing I can contribute myself is that Australian memories of World War II might be quite different...
