WI: Louis the Pious only had one son?

Strong rulers aren't always a good thing. Powerful monarchs usually end up trying to expand their territory and the Frankish empire was already too vast to prevent the Majordomos from stealing authority from the Emperors.

This actually leads to the empire growing weaker, and its one of the resons the Merovingian dynasty collapsed.

Louis the Pious didn't expand his territory (except for a marches in East Germany and Northen Spain), he turned inward and tried to stabilise the Empire against attack from Danes and Moors and internal treats. The next Emperor would likely have continued this tendens, but with a few conquest in Pannovia, and maybe a attempt to conquer Denmark or vassalise it.
