WI: Longstreet in command of ANV

From what (admittedly little) I've read about the ACW, it's said that Longstreet had a better grasp of the changes in warfare since the time on Napoleon than Lee possessed.

So, for whatever reason, Lee is not put in charge of the ANV. Maybe his heart condition convinces him to retire, maybe he isn't able to shake the "Granny Lee" stigma, whatever. What would it take for Longstreet to be put in command of the Army of Northern Virginia and what would happen?

In stead of Beauregard being sent west to become second in command to Albert Sidney Johnston the President chooses Lee following Lee's dismall failure in West Virginia. When Beauregard publically criticizes Davis and argues with him he gets sent to the Carolina's and Georgia.

Now with Lee out of the way the whole situation can change completely because Lee was brought to Virginia to handle strategic deployment of troops between the different departments of Virginia in March or April of 1862 - I can't remember which - and it was both his decision to move to the Peninsula and his decision to fight a stage by stage withdraw. Johnston would have moved to the Peninsula once it was clear McClellan was there in force but he wouldn't have fought a stage by stage withdraw, he would have pulled back immediately to the surrounding area's of Richmond and wanted to be reinforced by troops from the Carolina's and Georgia so he could fight McClellan on near parity near Richmond, defeat him, neutralize his army then turn into North Virginia and clear that area of Federals.

Chances of Johnston being wounded anyway aren't negligible because, as his career shows, he was a bullet magnet, wounded many times in battle. So should he be wounded he would be replaced by G.W. Smith. G.W. Smith, though being an excellent organizer and administrator, is unsuited for army command because he is regularly laid low by an illness which sees him be confined to his bed for days on end and probably did not have the right mental fortitude for it so he wont last long in command of any army, he'll either suffer a nervous breakdown or be remove for health reasons. And thus Longstreet becomes the most senior General in the field with the Army and gets command.

How he'd do I am not really sure because while he may have possessed many qualities that could have made him an excellent army commander the few independent command he recieved in OTL saw him be lackluster and unimaginative resulting in failure.
