WI: Longer Lasting Polish-Swedish union

Sigismund III Vasa was King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1587 to 1632, and also of Sweden from 1592 to 1599, when he was deposed dethroned by his uncle duke Charles.

Do you think that this Polish-Swedish union could have lasted for a longer time?

My personal belief is that such a union could not last. IIRC most of the Swedish nobles were opposed to the union of the two countries.

I too think that it couldn't last for very long time. But maybe for a little longer than it did, maybe even till the of Sigismund in 1632.

What if duke Charles dies before John III?

You need different Sigismund Vasa for this. He was staunch catholic.

Different upbriding would do it.

Perhaps Poland going protestant (creation of a "National Church" under Sigismund Augustus) would make the union more stable.

As mentioned, with Poland and Sweden on opposite sides of the Reformation this is _very_ unlikely to last much longer than it did. If a Lutheran *Sigmisond Vasa, or at least one that did not make enemies of the Swedish nobility/population were elected it could work for a lifetime or perhaps longer.

The problem is not Poland (there were a lot of various protestants), but Sigismund's personality.

AFAIK Charles IX also was sympathetic towards Calvinism which was dominant branch in Poland and that took long time in both countries to settle all those things.
