The Long Depression is a retronym of the economic crisis of the late 19th century. It was formerly known as the Great Depression before the early 20th century depression took that name.
Twenty three years is a long time for an economic downturn. By the time it ended the United States and Germany had caught up with the British Empire. The world would enjoy a brief period of financial bless before WWI. Some say it was caused by a shortage of gold. In which case an earlier Klondike gold rush (1896) and Porcupine gold rush (1909), among others, could have shortened or eliminated this entire episode of history.
What would the world look like without the Long Depression? Anyone dare to speculate? One of the immediate impacts would be a very different Scramble for Africa, which was largely caused by the economic situation in Europe.
