WI: Lithuanian-Muscovite union

I was playing a MEIOU game as Lithuania and I converted to Orthodoxy. After that, I made royal marriages in the Russian principalities and then I formed a personal union with Muscovy.

What if Lithuania converted to Orthodoxy under Algirdas? Can he form a personal union with Muscovy?

More like Algirdas says that he wants to annex Muscovy. It's plausible though, since he or Vytautas could convert to Orthodoxy and make Lithuania the Third Rome. Alternatively, have Jogaila marry some Russian princess instead of Jadwiga.

Have Casimir IV of Pomerania sire children with Joanna of Lithuania, the sister of Jogaila, I think Jogaila and Casimir IV of Pomerania could be allies against the Angevins and have Jogaila convert to Orthodoxy.

Another option for a Lithuanian ruler would be Svitrigaila, since he had the support of the Orthodox population there. The Coat of arms for this Russo-Lithuanian union would be similar to OTL PLC but replace the Polish eagle with the Muscovite emblem (guy on a horse slaying the dragon).

Not Švitrigaila. In that case he is even less likely to keep the power.

Wasn't there some battle on a river the Lithuanians lost that ended their aspirations for conquering Muscovy? I think they had the last of the Golden Horde on their side or something too. Try reversing that.

I think you mean this:

Problem is that in the battle Vytautas was stopped from expanding southward, not eastward. OTOH he suffered terrible losses, which seriously damaged his reputation. Smolensk, Novgorod and Pskov rebelled against Lithuanian rule.

Winning the battle could set up Lithuania for further expansion eastward at a later date. Victory would also prevent the uprisings. To me it seems like victory increases the chances of a Lithuania-Muscovy union. Nice find though, I'd been looking for a while to find the name of that fight again.

What would be the best PoD for a Lithuanian-Muscovy union? Or perhaps should Lithuania be the main nation in unifying all of the lands of Rus'?

Why not have the Galicia and Hungary unite and be a competitor of Lithuania in uniting the Rus Principalities instead of Muscovy.

No one's looking at this from the Muscovite perspective. I'm not sure why; Vasily III put himself forward as a candidate for the Lithuanian throne in 1506, and Ivan IV thought he could conquer Lithuania...

Lithuania is already a Catholic by the time Vasily III wanted to become King of Lithuania and his son Ivan the Terrible isn't exactly what the Lithuanians are looking for. Of course, other than the proposed Jogaila-Sofia of Tver' matchup, what about having Algirdas as Grand Prince of Rus'? There's a reason why we couldn't look it up from the Muscovite perspective: the Rus' princes were too busy either fighting off the Golden Horde, or sucking up to the khans.
