WI: Lichtenstein and Vorarlberg join the Swiss Confederation?

On 11 May 1919, there was a referendum in Vorarlberg in which 80% voted to join Switzerland. Naturally, there was opposition to it - from Switzerland itself, from Austria, and from the Allies. Nevertheless, if opposition to this move could be overcome, could Vorarlberg join Switzerland? Would that also lead to Lichtenstein joining Switzerland, since Lichtenstein would be effectively surrounded by Switzerland?

I'm sure people in Lesotho ask themselves the same question being completely surrounded by South Africa.

Lichtenstein is unlikely, Voralberg(if you change some of the Allie's stances and make the Swiss actually want to absorb them which is easier said than done) could work though.

What happens from then on, specifically? It's possible that Austria, which was heavily against the vote IOTL, might see it as stealing land and when they get to be part of Germany, this newfound revanchist claim on the Swiss may be just the excuse Hitler needs...

Hitler figured Switzerland could wait and he wouldn't change his mind for Vorarlberg.

Hitler didn't invade Switzerland because that would have pushed the US into the war. He knew he couldn't face the US, USSR, Britain and France at the same time, so decided he'd declare war on America when he was ready

OK this is going to sound like a really stupid question but for what reason did Switzerland not want Vorarlberg to join?

Afraid they'd get sick from the River Ill?

Actually, I'd like to know myself. All Wiki says is it was opposed by "Swiss Liberals", whatever that means, and Franco- and Italo-swiss (cultural balance issues?). Perhaps fears of Austrian Irredentism?
