WI: Liberian Genocide

Everybody knows Americo-Liberians weren't exactly on good terms with the natives since they prohibited the the latter from acquiring the Liberian nationality, prohibited their right to own a plot of land, prohibited their right to vote, etc.

Then Samuel Doe's coup happened and (although the ensuing civil wars are indeed horrible) only involve the death of the previous president, Tolbert, and 39 of his supporters in the immediate aftermath.

But what if the natives actively go and kill any Americo-Liberians who they view as "oppressors" on sight similar to the Rwandan genocide? Would the US intervene as this is a country which creation it is directly responsible for and not a tiny nation in the middle of nowhere? How high would the casualties list be?

Given the united states did nothing during the first civil war and only intervened late in the second civil war I doubt it will do anything especially given Samuel Doe is an american ally and this during the cold war

Doe originally had plans for a larger blood letting.
Interesting, could you give me a link? I never about this before, nor is it mentioned anywhere that I can find.

I figured, but since this is set immediately after the US failed to rescue the hostages taken by Iran would Carter at least tried to improve the US military image with a small-scale evacuation effort like in Vietnam?

Since this immediately after the coup the Doe-US relationship hasn't been solidified yet I think.

He wouldn't do to improve American military image but he would defiantly pull american embassy staff if things get too hot

They weren't solidified with Doe but the united states didn't have issues with the coup due the former president opening up to Libya and the Eastern Bloc
