The 1970 general election was a disaster for the Liberal Party - they went from 12 to 6 seats - but it could have been even worse, because of those 6 seats, 3 - North Devon, Roxburgh, Selkirk and Pebbles and North Cornwall were held by very small majorities. What if the Liberals had lost those 3 seats too? Could they have recovered, or would they have entered a spiral of decline?
