After the general election in July 1892 the Conservatives and Liberal Unionist had the largest number of seats in the House of Commons, but they did not have an overall majority, and Gladstone became prime minister at the head of a minority Liberal government dependent on the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party. [1]
What if the Liberals had an overall majority of say 20 to 30 seats in the House of Commons. I assume that the second Irish Home Rule Bill would pass through the Commons and be overwhelmingly rejected by the Lords. Would Gladstone still resign as prime minister in March 1894 and be succeeded by the Earl of Rosebery?
The government would not be defeated on the supply of cordite to the army in a Commons vote in June 1895, thus butterflying the July-August 1895 general election. So assuming there was a general election in 1898, it would be a landslide victory by the Conservatives and Liberal Unionists. What would be the consequences of that victory? Would the Second Boer War still happen as it did in OTL? I assume the 1900 general election would be butterflied away and the Marquess of Salisbury would still resign as prime minister in July 1902 and be succeeded by Arthur Balfour who might call a general election in 1903.
