WI: Lercaro elected Pope in 1963

Giacomo Lercaro, the Cardinal Archbishop of Bologna, was considered papabile in the 1963 conclave, but ultimately thought to be too "radical". Lercaro, who had turned the episcopal palace of Bologna into an orphanage and preached about a "Church of the poor", can be seen in some respects as a precursor of Pope Francis. What if Lercaro had been elected Pope in 1963? What would have happened? Would the Vatican Museums have been given to UNESCO? At least one inquiring mind wants to know :)

Diamantina,

Well, for one thing, I imagine we'd end up with the Spirit of Vatican II on steroids - and a much larger schism on the right than we've had with Lefebvre.

But the problem is that it's such an unlikely point of departure - almost ASB. As it was, Montini only barely cleared the threshold for election. Lercaro was seen as considerably more liberal than Montini. I don't see how Lercaro gets to 54 votes.
