WI: Lee stays loyal to the Union and accepts Lincoln and Scott's offer.

Lee decided to shit all over whatever oaths he made to the United States out of some sort of stand on principal. Yet, when it came to treating black people better than cattle, he equally shag on whatever morals he had.

Fuck Robert E. Lee and the horse he rode in on. If there is a hell, I hope that traitorous piece of shit is burning in it right now.

I like this.

Look i'm not saying the Lee wasn't racist. What i'm trying to say is that in a situation where taking someone off the front lines for any reason could cause you to not only loose a war but also your countries independence then it doesn't matter if someone who's for perfect equality is in charge as they'll still keep the men and officers on the front lines fighting.(Also can we please get back to the original question please?)

Lee believed slavery was a necessary evil that God would eventually remove in some far future time. Lee inherited slaves from his mother before he was married. The slaves inherited from George Custis technically belonged to Mary Custis Lee, but Robert E Lee was the executor, and worked the slaves harder than Custis had. Lee was legally required to free the Custis slaves no later than five years from George Custis' death, but Lee petitioned the courts for an extension, which the courts denied. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia enslaved free blacks in their invasions of Maryland and Pennsylvania, but Lee did nothing to punished those involved. Lee's army massacred surrendering black troops at the Crater, but Lee did nothing to punish any of them.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was more of an abolitionist than Robert E Lee.

Holy shit; really?!

You know, I'm no fan of Lee (or any Confederate for that matter) but the fact that this isn't common knowledge astounds me. My knowledge of Civil War military history is severely limited - with my knowledge of Civil War political history being only slightly less so - but as a history lover and a fanatic for knowledge I'm ashamed that these facts slid passed me.

If this is true, and I don't doubt it is, then people really should still be pissed.

I'm going to fact check you, but let me just proudly put forth a preliminary "Fuck Lee" in the meantime. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Sure as that's actually an interesting question. I've honestly never though about what Lee's career post war would be like nor how he'd end up being remembered.

The options I see likely are:
1. He'd shun public life and go on being a rich planter. Not unlikely considering his actions in OTL. Based on some of what I've read about him post-war he wasn't really cut out for the America that developed after the war.
2. Forced into politics. I think he'd probably say no but there would definitely be a big push for him to run as president.
3. Teaching at one of the military academies. It's quite and away from public life.

About the Battle of the Crater:

It wasn't just Lee's troops that killed surrendering blacks (which confederate soldiers in every army did apparently), Union troops too killed surrendering blacks (that were on their own side) in hopes of being granted mercy by confederates who were overrunning their position.

The battle turned into a complete clusterf*** thanks to the fact that one of the division leaders wasn't even present (he went off on a bender) and political interference meant the troops that had trained for the assault were switched out for units that were not trained nor properly informed of the plans/objectives.

Not trying to justify anything, just pointing out that there were hardly any angels on either side.

Really? What was the US equivalent of GO No. 111?

Really? What was the US equivalent of GENERAL ORDERS, No. 111?

From the desk of the commander-in-chief, no less...

Best,
