Would Singapore been better off without LKY?

Say that he gets shot by some trigger happy Kempeitai officer, killed early by a Japanese bomb or simply starved to death during a food shortage. Whatever the cause, Lee dies in wartime before he has a chance to make an impact on history.

What would Singapore have looked like without his strict authoritarian rule? Was the expulsion from Malaysia inevitable? And if so, how would the small island nation have developed without the presence of an LKY government?

Assuming of course, that the arguement of Lee's quasi-dictatorial rule being the only thing that saved Singapore holds any water.
