WI: LBJ Killed in 1963

mello man 59: What you say makes a lot of sense to me. I think it would be very hard to get RFK to run for President in 64. Look how hard it was for him to run for the Senate, and even in 68 it was difficult to get him to run for Presidency although for different reasons. HHH would beat either Rocky or Goldwalter in 64. 68 who knows?
Thank you for your kind words.
I have an interesting question: How does the Vietnam War play out in this timeline? I am sure President McCormack will keep things on the back burner until the 1964 election.
How would President Humphrey handle the situation in Vietnam and in civil rights when he begins his term on January 20, 1965?
Who most likely will be his vice president?

Thanks.

I do not see Robert Kennedy in any way running for president in 1964. He is devastated by his brother's death and will need time to recover from this personal tragedy.

Of course Dallas hit him hard, but in OTL some of the Camelot people who would later be behind him in '68 did briefly test the waters for a challenge against LBJ at the end of '63, only LBJ took charge much too strongly for those efforts to bare any fruit.

But without the impediment of Johnson? Yeah, nah, I can't see RFK going all Cincinnatus in this scenario. He's still a coldblooded political numbers man, and if '64 is open he can calculate the appeal of running in the one sixties cycle in which he knows for certain he will have a dominant hand over HHH in the convention, and the GOP in the general; and looking forward, he can assess the appeal of staving off running until later cycles (the seventies, the eighties!) when as far as he knows his contemporaries like John Connally and Frank Church will have emerged as serious Democratic nomination rivals, and his own political capital will have begun to wane...

Things like Vietnam are going to be on the back burner

Maybe, if the US narrowly avoids a SHOTF moment with the Soviets, and a form of mild non-interventionism sweeps American politics.

But this isn't the thread for me to give a reality check about Vietnam-policy-in-any-TL-free-of-imminent-World-War-missile-launches.
