WI: LBJ had a heart attack on 11/22/63?

Shots have rang out in Dealey Plaza and due to the excitement Johnson has a heart attack which helps speed Kennedys limo and get both men to the hospital. “Vice President Johnson is dead” announces CBS anchor Walter Cronkite on every television in America. “The president is wounded but is in a stable condition.”

So what happens now? Who does JFK pick as VP after this? How is the world affected upon Johnson’s death? Can Kennedy win ‘64?

I'd say Humphrey, but given Johnson's role in the relationship was as part of the Democratic tradition of placating the Southern wing of the party (Since the traditional methods of Dixie's "courtly" rather than "popular" politics tended to produce better beuracrats/ power brokers but distinctly poor showers in elections) and serve as a connection to the big business community and it's donations you'd need to find somebody else. Are there any good governors with a weak stance on Civil Rights he can tap?

If both Kennedy and Johnson had both lived to 1964, Kennedy would have almost definitely dropped him from the ticket. Johnson was under investigation for unscrupulous financial dealings, and may well have been impeached or forced to resign if the investigation continued. OTL, the investigation was called off because the investigators didn't want to be put the country through the trauma of an impeachment right after the previous President had been assassinated.

In 1960, some say that Kennedy only offered Johnson the VP slot as a formality and expected him to decline. Others say John Kennedy wanted him on the ticket while Robert Kennedy was trying to sabotage it. Regardless, the other men on John Kennedy's VP short list were Stuart Symington, Senator for Missouri and George Smathers, Senator for Florida. One of them would've been Kennedy's running mate in 1964.

Edit: Kennedy will win in 1964 regardless of running mate (within reason). In the long term, Johnson's death will prevent a large expansion into Vietnam, but an equivalent of the War on Poverty may come later down the line under a different President (Nelson Rockefeller, maybe).

This is most likely my bias as a Georgian showing, but how about Carl Sanders? While he was a segregationist, he cooperated with Kennedy and Johnson on civil rights legislation, and was a major part of the reason the process went relatively smoothly in Georgia compared to her neighbors.

Considering he would've only been Governor of Georgia for a year in 1964, I don't think Carl Sanders would've been able to make it to the VP slot, a cabinet post maybe. However, he could possibly be Vice Presidential (or dark horse Presidential) material for 1968.

Nobody. 25th A. wasn't passed until 67. Prior to that, there was no provision for filling VPOTUS vacancies. OTL, there wasn't one from November 22, 1963 until January 20, 1965.

He'd still have to pick someone as his VP running mate for '64, which I think was the point here.
