WI: LBJ as Campaign Manager in '60

When Kennedy originally approached Johnson, he thought he was going to be asked to be campaign manager. Instead, he was offered the Vice Presidency.

But what if Kenendy had asked Johnson to be Campaign Manager, and asked someone else to be VP?

....there is no way in seven Hells he would have accepted it. Johnson was a powerful player in the senate there is no way he would give that up to manage the campaign of some hotshot freshman democratic senator.

That hotshot young Senator (who was not a freshman, as he won reelection in 1958) was the rising star of the party and had already won the nomination soundly.

And, I believe it was already discussed previous that Johnson's power in the senate was already softening.

This, and it's not like Johnson would have to give up his seat to be the campaign manager. (I'm pretty sure, at least...)

Uhh... how does Jack break that news to Bobby? :p My own literature indicates that LBJ was offered the DNC chairmanship (ironic in light of what LBJ did to the DNC IOTL as POTUS), not the campaign manager's position. Which he'd never accept.

JFK wins by a respectable margin; LBJ in a lesser role is the man who cost the Republicans the House in 1940. He brings skills and oil money. All of the oil money, or nearly so.

There's a fair chance of it, he knew he was losing power.
