WI: Larger Confederacy

What if the Border states of Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri all join the CSA in the US Civil War? It certainly would put DC in a precarious position being surrounded on all sides by the enemy.

It might not lead to an independent CSA, but maybe a longer war as the US would have to secure some important cities (DC, maybe Louisville as it can be used as a staging point against Tennessee).

I've read the southerners wanted to claim Washington as their capital. That would be rough to defend from the rebels.

Otherwise, I'd expect the moves into the border states to be roughly equivalent to the 'securings' of those states in OTL (what was the 'martial law' imposed on Maryland is instead just considered direct occupation by northerners, the Missouri and Kentucky battles considered direct fighting, etc.). You get what I mean.

I think Lincoln said something like "If we lose Kentucky it's all over"

Missouri could probably join if you had less German immigration. The Germans were known as "the saviours of Missouri" because they kept it in the union

I think Lincoln arrested the Maryland legislature before they could vote?
