How might music have progressed had Kurt Cobain gone to rehab in early 94 and completed the treatment, only to leave Nirvana and become a Chris Brown-type R&B artist with heavy use of autotune?

He wouldn't have. That sort of thing was very very very not his style. A more interesting WI would in regards to him just surviving.

I am not sure but I think the announcement of Nirvana breaking up happened before Kurt Cobain's death. Knowing Cobain's personable ways it would be easy to imagine his reaction to the success of Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters post Nirvana.(Don't expect a quick reunion.) One very likely outcome involves Courtney Love that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I think being on the covers of supermarket tabloids for literally years would not be anyone's idea of a good time.

As for autotune that is one piece of equipment that should be banned from recording studios everywhere, no exceptions.

For the few individuals saying that Dave Grohl was going to leave Nirvana, Grohl and the other two dudes were just starting to work on a fourth studio album when Cobain died.

Nirvana was a three piece band for the most part, Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic. There were other people involved for touring and session work.

Does anyone know the actual date of the bands break-up?

1994 Courtney Love finds an unconscious, drugged Kurt Cobain in their hotel room in Rome, and he is later convinced to enter a rehabilitation program. His attempt on climbing a wall of the rehab fails and he is forced to complete the rehabilitation.

1995 Fully rehabilited, Cobain returns to Seattle, but he abandons Nirvana during the making of their comeback album. He would later state: "Fame and success were killing me. By the way, i hated success and fame even before being nearly dead, so that was the right moment to fucking vanish". Nirvana is near to breaking up, but Cobain himself suggests to the former bandmates to continue without him. Nirvana has now a new line-up: Dave Grohl abandons drums for taking the role of singer and rhythm guitarist, Krist Novoselic keeps his position as the bassist, Pat Smear remains the main guitarist while the new entry William Goldsmith becomes the drummer.

1996 Nirvana releases their fourth album, Rohypnol, whose tracklist includes some songs written and composed by Cobain himself. The album is a great success, both of public and critic, but some people complain it is essentially a "Clone of In Utero sung by Dave Grohl". A Rivers of Alcoholand live album is also released to success.

1997 Shangri-La Love-Cobain is born to Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, but the family keeps the child far from the public enough that some creepy urban legends regarding her identity start to arise. Courtney later assaults some journalists, and bets on how much the child would stay in the Cobain family before being taken by the social services become rather popular.

1998 The fifth album of Nirvana, Millennium?!, is released. It is a flop compared to the previous works of the band, even though it managed to top the charts for some time. Fans and critics alike complain that Nirvana abandoned the grunge sound for a more punk-rock-ish sound: "While this is undoubtedly a great album, Cobain's genius is all but present". Speaking of Cobain, he is seen under a mask in the public of the MTV Awards wielding a banner showing the Backstreet Boys' BSB logo. When they win, he unveils a part of the banner, who noy says Backstreet Suck Balls.

To be continued?

Did Cobain even have any interest in R&B? Maybe a bluesier side project, but going full on into R&B would be a massive career change.

Since you wanted me to continue...

1999 Cobain's "show" at the MTV Awards has been an hot topic in the past year, and after Nick Carter's condemning of the event, the media are now adding fuel to the fire, stating that a feud between the grungeman and the boyband is born. With his usual irony, Cobain posts on his newly-founded official website a lulzy cover of the BSB's song I Want It That Way, implying through the lyrics that the boys are actually "closeted homosexuals". Meanwhile, Nirvana breaks up: arisen musical differences between the members lead to a peaceful separation.

2000 Grohl and Goldsmith create the punk-rock band UFO, recruiting Taylor Hawkins as a drummer, while Novoselic, Smear and a couple of "novices" named Jack Forge and Simon Kodiak found the post-grunge band Paradise*.

2001 After AJ McLean's "outing" on drug abuse, the former enemy Kurt Cobain shows his support to the singer, posting a video on his site who also sees him crying while remembering his drug-filled past. At the end of the year, Cobain releases on the same site his solo debut EP, 911, who features tracks heavily inspired by McLean's story and the Twin Towers tragedy. UFO releases their first eponymous album, who is a great success and gets praised by people such as Green Day and Cobain himself. US fundamentalists organize a mass burning of 911 copies, judging the album "satanic and unamerican"

* Yeah, i turned Grohl punk-rock. So what?
