WI: Koxinga conquers Manila

What were things like on the Spanish side of things in the 1660s?

Koxinga was not the threat but the rebellions in Luzon that were against the Spanish that happened the same time when Koxinga gained Taiwan, the rebellions started to coordinate and merge themselves but the Spanish were able to make alot of changes and put garrisons and foil the individual rebellions before they actually make a united effort which cost the spanish their successes in Mindanao .

The Spaniards were actually quite worried, which is why they weren't able to crush the Moros. They withdrew their soldiers to Manila in preparation for an invasion that never came because malaria. Malong and Maniago and Almazan were sideshows to the fear of Koxinga's assault.

Of course, we also have to remember that these were the dying days of the Habsburg empire (1665 is the start of Carlos II 'so-inbred-a-union-between-brother-and-sister-is-less-inbred' von Habsburg). Spain retained its vast empire, but it was starting to feel the strain and the debt. Also the hit from the exile of the Moriscos.

Koxinga was not a threat but the rebellion of Maniago, Almazan and Malong are merging into one and had the support of the population, of course the Spanish would like to claim that it was Koxinga that was the threat because it would be shameful to the Spanish if the people of Luzon expelled the Spanish and if these three revolts united and merged into one front and crushed the Macabebes, the Spanish would be kicked out.

The destabilization caused by Koxinga and the chinese community would also help the Luzon revolt as well...
