In 1806, Sweden offered the sovereignty of the baltic isle of Gotland to the Knights Hospitalier, who had recently lost their control of Malta to the british, but the knights refused the offer as they hoped to regain Malta from the british after the end of the french revolutionary wars. Of course, such a devolution never happened, and the Knights Hospitalier remain, today, a stateless entity.
But what if the knights had accepted the offer and went to Gotland? For how long would they be able to keep the island?
