WI: Kingdom of Israel?

What if Israel became a monarchy instead of a republic? Who would be a likely leader? Would this lead to worse or better relations with certain countries?

Only option for monarchy is probably dominion system where monarch of UK is head of Israel. But I am not sure how long it would last. And probably you need bit earlier POD for this. Arab nations might be bit lesser willingful to invade Israel but relationships are still quiet bad.

Problem is that there is no dynasty left. And several founders of Isreal were quite left wing (some socialists) so it'd be hard to sell.

My guess is that the only this would come to pass would be if Isreal was to become an ultra jewish state, rebuild the temple type affair. Net result would be far worse relations with every other nation

Sorry, by WWII, kingdoms had had their time. If there were a kingdom of Israel, it would have to be founded between 1830 and 1870. Or it would have to be established in 1918 as a British crown colony, later to become an independent state in the Commonwealth. (One would wonder though how the orthodox Jews of Jerusalem would feel about being ruled by the head of the Church of England.)

Speciality if there is still queen.

Most of the founders of pre-State and early state Israel were secularists and socialists. A kingdom isn't likely, especially one led by the Church of England.

You could maybe get a dominion-style state with the King/Queen of the UK as head of state, represented by a governor-general; but I think the best shot of a Jewish kingdom would be to have Jewish nobility appointed as a king (someone from the Rothschilds, maybe).

A king of Israel would necessarily have to be Jewish, so that rules out any member of any royal family (as far as I know).

Perhaps a 'Coheni' who was considered to matrilinealy Jewish and patrilinealy one of the Twelve Tribes might be considered king. If someone could trace themselves in an unbroken line from the House of David, this might work but how to get the documentation accepted by the majority [especially considering how sporadic record keeping became during the Dark Ages].

Well... theres those Solomonids who in 1948 rule the vast country of Ethiopia. They have a pretty solid claim on the House of David.

As they are a solidly acknowledged Davidic Cadet dynasty.

Yeah, but they're Orthodox Christian and from what I hear Ethiopian Jews do not exactly receiver a warm welcome in Israel in the modern day.

Well... you can probably get one of the Solomonid Dynasts to convert but then again OP wasn't asking for a jewish candidate. Just a likely one.

I'm fairly sure that an Ethiopian King would lead to abit less racism and possibly easier relations with the neighbours as the House of David is respected in islam.

Good luck finding a descendant of David to refound the royal line.

There are various Jewish families which
have folk histories, to some extent believed by those who care, of being descendants of the House of David. One man, generally thought of as having a pretty good claim, is if I recall correctly, a slightly successful American actor.
