WI King Lunalilo of Hawaii lives longer?

So King Lunalilo was the most liberal monarch in Hawaii before the islands ended up being annexed into the U.S, but he died of a lung infection just barely into his reign. With him living longer, how much would Hawaii change under his rule? How long would the Islands' annexation be delayed, if at all? What policies would he enact if he lives longer?

He had little choice but to let the plantations develop, but if he get Universal Suffrage off the ground fast enough he has a chance of keeping the planters from taking over outright.

For him, that could certainly be a possibility. How will the planters react to this though? and what would he do to secure his kingdom from losing it's independence in some way?

Realistically there's no chance of Hawaii remaining completely independent at this stage. The islands had to good of a strategic location for the Great powers to ignore. However, Hawaii could end up a Protectorate of Britain, France or even Germany if its Monarch play's his cards right.

That's what I am thinking about. With the right cards in place, Hawaii could very well end up as a Protectorate of Great Britain (for a very loose sense of the word "Protectorate" ~ala British Malaya or Sarawak) or another colonial power by...how early? 1880's? 1890's?

Hm, earliest would be 1880s, I think. It would have to be before the US takes and active interest in the Pacific (aka establishing military bases) but after the Great powers make their own interests known. I think either Germany or the UK would be the best bets, depending on when. If its after Wilhelm II's ascension at least, if before then Britain is the realistic choice.

a German Hawaii would be interesting. If WWI still happened or some equivalent. I assume it would fall into British or Japanese hands?

Okay, so 1880's the best bet.

Probably British, but a Japanese Hawaii does sound interesting.

Okay, new question: King Kalakaua aka. The Monarch After Lunalilo made a world trip back in the early 1880's, wanting to see how others ruled. With Lunalilo on the throne, would he also go on a round-the-world trip? would his brother do the same now that he's a Prince?

Lunalilo is a bit tricky.

I think he's aware of the situation surrounding the Island's position, and he did try to make a treaty with the USA over Sugar.
So if he lives longer, he might figure that out without getting Pearl involved.

If he can manage that, then it's probable the USA becomes important to the nation's survival and support.
On that note, the Missionary party would probably be much more accepting of his rule, given that he wanted to reform.
It might not completely prevent the overthrow, but I think it would diminish it.

Remember Kalakaua took full advantage of his power to dismiss and make new cabinets and ministers, and it made a lot of powerful folks angry.

I don't see Germany getting anything. they're too far away, and I sincerely doubt Lunalilo would trust them. the British Citizens in the Islands liked Lunalilo better, so that might have some bearing on who he goes to.

As for Kalakaua, His situation is very precarious if Lunalilo continue to live.

I don't really know who Lunalilo can marry, but most believe that if he got the chance, he would have made Queen Emma his heir, thus pushing Kalakaua further out of the running.

Bear in mind the only reason Kalakaua got in is because he was elected. I think it's possible he might do a similar tour, if Lunalilo doesn't have children.
He's still in the running for being elected king.

I'm actually more interested in the Cultural effects a longer Lunalilo would have.
Remember, Hula and other traditional practices got a revival under Kalakaua. Lunalilo was also an avid songwriter, and he had written the first Anthem for Hawaii.

Hmm, a Sugar treaty or an equivalent might stave off the problem in the short-term, but I doubt that Hawaii is getting away that easy; it's too strategically located. Sooner or later there will be some Great Power (either the U.S or Britain) that will want a base there. On the other hand, if it makes the Missionary Party -somewhat- happy, then it would give Lunalilo some buying time, which is what I want.

Okay, so a similar world tour could be possible. Curious here, could Kalakaua made a world tour during the 1870's instead of the 1880's? Also, would there be a chance for him to send letters back home while he's off somewhere in Europe or Asia?

Oooh, so Lunalilo could have also changed Hawaii culturally. Anymore cultural things Lunalino would change? (kinda a noob on Hawaiian culture at the moment :p)

The revival of the hula actually began under Kamehameha V, but was far more openly displayed under Kalakaua.

If we were to scroll back a few years it was known that Lunalilo was an early suitor to Victoria Kamamalu, the Kuhina Nui of Hawaii, tho she apparently just rubberstamped whatever her brothers Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V asked her. It has been suggested that marriage to Victoria would have had a stabilizing effect on Lunalilo. The Kamehameha brothers were against any marriage between Lunalilo and Victoria since any offspring would have had high rank (more mana) than the reigning Kamehamehas.

The only really screw up that Lunalilo did, but then recanted, was to sign a reciprocity treaty with the US and giving them Pearl Harbor.

Oooh, Is it possible that he could marry her anyways in an ATL? How bad could the royal/political fallout be if he did so?

And from what I've read, that treaty with Pearl Harbour was unpopular with the Hawaiians, so that could be easy to butterfly.
