WI King George II of Greece is assassinated on 1939?

I read an article somewhere that on 1939 Mussolini and Ciano had devised a plan in which King George II of Greece (who was a moderate anglophile) would be assassinated by Italian agents and he would be succeded by his brother Paul who was under the influence of his pro-German and pro-Nazi wife Frederica of Hannover...
However the plan wasnt materialised...
WI the plan was succesfull?
How is George's II death and the subsequent succession of his brother Paul alters History? Any thoughts?

I don't see how this would make a difference. The most powerful man in Greece was not the king but the dictator, General Metaxas, who was both pro-British and pro-German. In any case, pro-German does not equal pro-Italian, certainly not if Mussolini still attacks Greece.

The influence of Paul could very well strengthen the pro-German camp in Greece leading them to sign up with the Axis and thereby preventing an Italian attack on Greece altering the course of WWII dramatically though I doubt it would change the actual result.

Other than perhaps a Communist Greece...

King Paul under the influence of his wife could depose Metaxas and appoint a more pro-German politician as PM and Greece becomes an ally of the Axis... (Metaxas was never that popular till 1940 when he rejected the Italian ultimatum)
So Hitler with his flank secure from British attacks could attack USSR earlier than OTL..

Mussolini didn't consult with Hitler about attacking Greece, in fact he made sure to take him by surprise. Then again, Yugoslavia was only attacked after the anti-Axis coup, so who knows? But if this saves Greece from an Italian attack I don't think it will save it from Italian pressure. It might end up being forced to fulfil some Italian (and possibly Bulgarian) demands for territory and/or basing rights. Kinda like Romania in 1940, though not on the same scale.

If Greece enters the Axis with a pro-German King and a pro-German PM and they were forced ti fullfill Italian and and Bulgarian demands this would have lead to a rebellion and Greece switching sides...
