Yeah, title said that.
So King Edward VIII decides that being King is sightly better than outright commiting himself to marriage to his infamous paramour :p

Maybe fathering a bastard or two... in secret (damn, too many ASOIAF)

So his brother will stay as heir... but then, we knew that George hit the bucket faster than Edward... or not ITTL?

Who will be the next heir then?

Prince Albert, Duke of York, was a well known heavy smoker even before becoming King George VI, the stress of being King, a job he didn't want and lived in terror of till it happened and the War likely did him in earlier than otherwise, but his smoking and life long ill health would likely have done for him before Edward, after all their younger sister Mary died in 1965

any ways if Edward died in 1972 as he did in OTL, his brother would be 76 years old, in OTL Edward was the longest lived of the children of George V at 77

any ways, by the time Edward VIII became king Elizabeth had already been born (she was 10 in 1936) as had Princess Margaret who was 6, Elizabeth would be the heir if her father was died by 1972, she'd be 46 years old.

Assuming George, Prince of Wales dies on schedule, and Edward VIII has no legitimate issue, George's daughter Elizabeth will ascend to the throne upon Edward VIII's expiration in 1972.

Would this scenario have affected Elizabeth's choice of husband? Until Edward died, there would still be the likelihood that he could marry and produce an heir.

As a young man there doesn't seem to have been any great pressure on Edward too get married to a suitable future queen, no one appears to have been lining up the single royalty and nobility.

Before WS he showed no inclination to settle down at all.

And for the Heiress Presumptive.

Philip is generally considered to have been a good match.

He was certainly Elizabeth's choice.

He is far enough down any other lines of succession for this not to be a complication.

His 4 sisters being married to Germans, 3 ardent Nazis, has not seemed to be an issue, it might even make him a better choice in Edward's eyes.

what if the butterfly cause George to beget a son somewhere in late 1930s or early 1940s... no stress from being King means more time for family yes?

Edward might get into trouble with his desire for peace with Germany. He probably would have known to keep his mouth shut particularly during his meetings with Churchill. Churchill strikes me as a blabbermouth. Elizabeth being married with children would have been more popular than her uncle.

Then that son becomes King, but considering the way things were, I doubt George would have more kids.
