In 21 April 1967 several right-wing officers attempted a coup which (with King Constantine's II help) established a military dictatorship in Greece...
At first the King was going well with the new regime (coup leaders had accepted his proposition that no military man be appointed Prime Minister and the Attorney General of the Supreme Court K. Kollias was appointed then)
By Autumn 1967 relations between the coupist Government and the King deteriorated and Constantine II formed a counter-coup plan...
He was to fly in Thessaloniki where he had the loyalty of the powerful III Army Corps and broadcast a message sacking the coupist Government while troops loyal to him would move to Athens... The plan was set up for 13 December 1967...
However the plan was betrayed and everything went wrong... on the night of 12/13 December 1967 several royalists officers were arrested and their orders for the counter-coup were neutralised... King's plane made it only till Larissa and the message couldnt be broadcasted from there... While the Commander of III Army Corps General Zoitakis (who Constantine II thought as loyal to the Monarchy) switched sides... Constantine II flew to the city of Cavala hoping from help from the local CIA station but he was denied help... At the morning of 13th December 1967 he escaped to Rome with Prime Minister Collias... While Colonel Papadopoulos (head of the April's 21 coup) became Prime Minister and General Zoitakis (the guy who switched sides) became Regent...
WI his counter-coup was succesfull? Could he had restore Democracy? How is this altering History? Any thoughts?
