WI Kim Il-sung dies young

Lets say that Kim Il-sung dies in a car crash in 1955. How does this effect North Korean development. Could a more moderate leader become the leader of North Korea? Would North Korea be in a better situation without him by today? Kim Jong-il was only 14 at this time and would not become leader since he was too young. What would become of old Kim Jing Jong Bing Bong-il?

NK probably remains a dependent Soviet satellite along the lines of Mongolia, and decommunizes around 1990 or so.

I would consider this the most likely option as well. This being said even a post-Communist North Korea may remain authoritarian and turn down reunification, though obviously its case for doing so would be weaker. Assuming it's an economic basket case as in OTL, however, the South might play along and, while ostensibly calling for reunification, quietly endorse the status quo in order not to face the prohibitive economic costs.
