If you choose to accept, just as the title says, as Marx had at least some options. Instead of being a sole reporter for one newspaper, he could have branched out, though the man was never much of a businessman. He was paid 5$ an article, which can be put in various ways to maybe 250$ or so in 2013 cash, though no method is exact in comparison. He did this for 9 years with

Also of note, in print anyway, he seems to have absolutely hated Russia. Even later he did not think that the place would be where the revolution would start, and before becoming full time (supported by Engels, a rich boy by day and revolutionary behind the scenes) he railed on how Russia was on the march towards the gates of sacred Europe. Anarchists would still be around, but how would this change the world? Being such a deep thinker Marx provided depth beyond the frothing of mouth and reoccurring Russian/European revolutions which were soon forgotten.

He wrote about 400 articles during that time, which would mean 2,000 USD or about 40,000USD in 2013 currency over 9 years, 4,000 USD a year in expensive London of the time, roughly speaking.
