John Thune almost beat Tim Johnson for the Dakota Senate Seat, losing by only 532 votes out of over 300,000 cast. I am not going to point to any specific POD since there are likely many, some of which we could not identify, but say Thune were to win that Senate election.

Majority (now Minority) Leader Tom Daschle now does not need to face John Thune for his own seat in 2004, and I am not sure what other candidates could potentially challenge Daschle for the seat and have a hope of winning. However, at the same time Daschle has just be given a major political defeat in that he worked very hard to get Johnson another term in the Senate and failed, even if only by a narrow margin. Assuming he stays Leader after 2004, how does he compare to Harry Reid?
