WI: John Lennon assassination '66

To bring up a point that has been left untouched, McCartney and Harrison were friends long before McCartney met Lennon, and McCartney considered Harrison his little brother (Paul being a year older I think). In fact, one of The Quarrymen's first recordings, "In Spite of All the Danger", was written by Paul and George.

I'm not saying George was on Paul's level by 1966, but I think they could have a good working relationship if that brother dynamic comes into play. Granted, they could battle like they did in the OTL, with Paul being bossy and telling George what to do, and George being pissed off about it.

Well if the KKK assassinate Lennon then I'd imagine the backlash from many teenagers against them would quadruple at best (for the Klan).

It'd be like if the Tea Party killed Justin Bieber.

The Beatles actually had a real fan base, though. Justin Bieber's just one in a long line of artificially created stars for the music industry to milk tweens for 2 years until his fame runs out. You'd have the wrath of the entire youth culture.

Hadn't relations between Harrison and McCartney frayed by 1966? They may have been close initially, but I can't see McCartney avoiding his "control freak" tendencies in the studio if Lennon dies. That means, at least where McCartney's own material is concerned, he's still going to be telling Harrison how play. The upside is that under these circumstances he'll probably make more of an effort where Harrison's material is concerned, so it might balance out. Still I think the situation will be tense.
