WI: John Kerry v. Romney 2012 (Kerry doesn't run in 2004, gets elected President in 2008)

Let's say that John Kerry doesn't run in 2004, Bush still gets re-elected, and then Kerry gets elected in 2008. What would a 2012 Kerry v. Romney map look like?

Edit: I wonder if Kerry would benefit from anti-Mormonism.

Given the fact that Kerry came closer to winning the Presidency in circumstances more favorable to his opponent (Bush) than Romney did in circumstances that were less favorable to his opponent (Obama), I think Kerry wins, barring a disaster of a term.

He loses.

Obama was likable and chatismatic.

John Kerry was... well, John Kerry.

Even Mitt Romney wins that contest.

That said, with two Massachusetts billionares, good year for a third party spoiler.

How does Kerry beat Obama in 2008 in the primary when the Clinton Machine failed to do so?
Okay, with the repackaging of subprime mortgages, and the financial crisis which hit Sept. 2008.

Let’s say it hits a little earlier and Kerry has staked out an anti-Wall Street position?

Kerry scrapes by (Romney was a singularly bad candidate, as uncharismatic as Kerry but without the war record or the trustworthiness, easily tarred as a craven stuffed-shirt corporate raider to boot due to his history as a stuffed-shirt corporate raider), but it's way closer than any Democratic strategist wants.

Maybe something like this, with Kerry (272) and Romney (266):
