One thing that's almost certainly for sure - Toole wouldn't have committed suicide, at least not under the same circumstances. Would the book have had the same impact without the tragic backstory of the book's 1980 publication? Would it have won the Pulitzer Prize? Would there have been one or more sequels? Perhaps most interesting is what Toole's reaction would be to the number of real-life Ignatiuses living with their parents and trolling online in the Internet age.
