Apologize if this has been done differently. What would have been the consequences if, for whatever reason, John Kennedy decided to focus on his Senate career for awhile and did not enter into the 1960 Democratic nomination contest.

In 1959 LBJ thought himself the front runner for Ds - he was Senate Majority Leader. The process was different than now - fewer primaries and more caucuses. Certainly the south would have supported LBJ so he just needed to pick up some caucus like support across the west and midwest. ITL Kennedy's campaign manager (RFK) flew around to those states, making deals that left LBJ out in the cold.
