WI Jimmy Carter elected President in 1992

Suppose Jimmy Carter was elected President in 1992 instead of Bill Clinton.

Carter was 68 years old in 1992 and is still active today.

There are two possible PODs. The most likely is that Carter does not run for President in 1976 or runs but loses. He then gets elected to the Senate in 1978 and does run for President successfully in 1992. The problem with this timeline is that it completely butterflies away the OTL Carter administration -and also Sam Nunn's senatorial career- so by the time 1992 comes around things are already completely different.

The more interesting POD, that keeps everything the same up to 1992, is a Carter political comeback. By 1992 Carter had improved his reputation with the public that a comeback was feasible. Carter seems to have had no interest in doing this, he also could have been elected to the Senate from Georgia in 1986 or returned as Governor and passed that up (Georgia elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1986 and Carter carried the state in 1980 so I think that seat could have been Carter's if he had wanted it). But if George McGovern could run for president again in 1988, a Carter comeback is not a crazy idea and lets say he goes for it and it actually works.

Why not run in 1988, which unlike 1992 was originally projected to be a Democratic year?

Actually he ran in 1984, not 1988, and did terribly.

Anyhow, had former President Carter ran in 1992 he'd be laughed at before going down to defeat. The public respected his post-presidency activism, but memories of his administration have always been unfavorable.

It is quiet unlikely that Democrat would win presidential election in '88. Only way might be if Reagan would had enforced to resign over Iran-Contra Scandal.

Have you been drinking Billy's beer?

Seriously though, Jimmy isn't beating another Billy. Clinton was too hip, too young, and too charismatic. You have to remove him from the equation first. Even then Jimmy is tarred with economic malaise and the problems with Iran (which Bush can use following the successful Gulf War; I did what Jimmy couldn't). Jimmy has also been out of politics for a long stretch. I just can't see it and I have dreamt up some whacky stuff.

In contrast, first Hart (before the scandal) and then Dukakis were projected to defeat Bush by double digits. It was only after Bush enjoyed a boost thanks to the GOP convention and he fought an aggressive campaign that the election became competitive - and only after Dukakis failed to counter Bush's attacks and generally ran a poor, gaffe-rone campaign was Bush able to enter the lead. A more aggressive, competent Democrat who did the opposite of Dukakis (as any smart politician wpuod have) would have beaten Bush.

1992 wasn't 1988 b/c the Cold War wasn't going on in the 90's as well.
