Was browsing facebook and someone had posted a picture of one of those giant million dollar crosses that plague the churches of the U.S. The context was of course that if they had spent all that money helping people rather than obnoxiously decorating... etc. etc.

One of the comments was essentially: If it had been a windmill then there could have been renewable Christianity!

It was kind of a stupid comment, but I thought to myself... Good Lord, if Christ had been crucified on a windmill... BUTTERFLIES!

So, I looked up the history of the windmill. Vertical sail windmills are a few centuries away, but Hero of Alexandria was a young man who was inventing and experimenting during the time, and he did produce a windmill like device. Say he invents a vertical wooden version of his windmill and the technology makes it to Jerusalem just in time for Jesus to be crucified...

Just handwave the improbability for a moment and answer me this: If the Romans in Jerusalem were using windmills placed on Golgotha both to grind their meal (or whatever) and to crucify dissidents and Jesus is crucified on one...

How does the windmill as a Christian symbol effect history? Would churches in the modern world eventually be known for clean, renewable energy?

Also, of massively less importance than the above: spinny crucifix necklaces seem pretty cool to me. How about you?
