WI: Jefferson Davis shot

What if, while being captured in Irwinville, Jefferson Davis was "shot while resisting" by a trigger-happy soldier and killed? Might this lead to deeper resentment between the North and South and a rougher Reconstruction?

Well it would in effect, at least partially, "nullify" some of the horror of Lincoln's own assassination.

Jefferson Davis would be remembered as a great martyr to the cause of Southern liberty and would figure much more prominently in the "Lost Cause" mythology. I would also expect Southern bitterness towards the Union to be more marked than it was IOTL.
