WI: Jefferson Davis captured in 1864?

First post, longtime lurker.

According to https://jeffersondavis.rice.edu/about-jefferson-davis/chronology/civil-war, that in mid-August 1864, while touring Petersburg, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was nearly led into Federal lines. What if he was captured then? What would Stephens do? How would this affect the Election? Would the war have ended several months earlier, preventing further "useless effusion of blood"?
Interesting POD, I'd never heard of this! I believe Stephens gave a speech to the Georgia legislature in 1864 suggesting the South make peace, but I can't remember what the context was for his statement. It's possible he could seek peace over the winter, but I doubt Lincoln would consider rescinding the Emancipation Proclamation in exchange for the South's reentry, so I'm not sure how much earlier the war will end.

Jefferson Davis was one of the big reasons the CSA didn't sue for peace after Lincoln was re-elected. Lincoln losing was the last chance the CSA had - as soon as he won, every death in the war afterward died to satisfy the ego and pride of Jeff Davis and Bobby Lee.

Even if the South doesn't surrender, and the war proceeds as planned, one very important Virginian POD: Davis isn't around to order Richmond burned down to cover him fleeing. It took years and several Virginian fortunes to rebuild the city... with Richmond left standing, especially it's factories, there is a good chance Virginia gets to industrialize, at least as much as Maryland did OTL.

A Virginia not entirely stuck in the post-Antebellum depression that enveloped most of the former CSA would have major consequences in Virginia - maybe prying it away from the solid South a century ahead of OTL.
