WI Jeff Gillooly decides to kill Nancy Kerrigan?

(Note: I was inspired to post this WI by the movie I, Tonya, obviously, though I've been thinking about it for a while. With apologies to Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan.)

PoD: When Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt (1) put together their plot to help Tonya win, instead of hitting Nancy Kerrigan in the knee, they decide to have her killed. Assume that they don't fill Tonya in on the murder part.

So, when Nancy Kerrigan walks into that corridor at the Cobo Arena, Shane Stant is waiting with a .38-caliber revolver and empties the gun into her (and a security guard and/or bystander who tries to stop him). Needless to say, Stant will be caught much quicker than OTL...

Effects, anyone?

(1) IMO, they likely were the masterminds, but Tonya knew about it (frankly, I don't think Tonya was the mastermind here) and might have been an accessory IOTL.

There would be some real effects if Kerrigan was killed. And yes everyone involved in the matter gets busted real quickly.

1. - Stant, Gillooly and Eckhardt likely end up doing real hard time with Stant getting Life in Prison for Murder while Gillooly and Eckhardt are likely given Lengthy prison sentences for a multitude of charges and Eckhardt dies in prison assuming he dies in 2007 as per OTL.
2. - If Tonya knew anything about the murder before she would be extremely lucky if she could even so much as watching any part of the 1994 Olympics from anywhere inside the venues and her Figure Skating career comes to an abrupt end anyway and she ends up in prison for being an accessory (Although she will do everything she can to try if she can to strike a deal with prosecutors to testify against Gillooly and Eckhardt in exchange for the lightest sentence possible).
3. - The murder case would have extensive national media coverage until June when the O.J. Simpson murder case (I'm probably sure no butterflies caused by this would prevent that.) completely overshadows it and takes center stage (Although the major Radio and Television stations in Detroit will still be all over the Kerrigan murder case).
4. - Lawmakers would attempt to use Nancy Kerrigan's name in legislation.

There's some of the real effects there if there's others that anyone reading this do think of just post your reply.

The weird thing is from what I remember from that mess there was, initially was a lot of support for Tanya. I was in College at the time, and stupidity the guys feelings had to do with who you thought was better looking. Tanya won the clear majority of the votes!

I heard then and now a lot of "Tanya is one person us! Nancy is a snobish rich girl" which is pretty sad, as she was a victim. If I remember correctly, Kerrigan didn't have the best personality. After she won she got her Silver medal, she got a free trip to be the parade Marshall at Disney world. She made some not so "nice and pure" comments into a hot mic that made her look like Myersona spoiled rich girl and lost her the sympathy vote.

My opinion then and now was Harding knew what was going on but not past the the accessorie stage.

So assuming that her level is the same, I guess this: she turns states witness. Maybe she gets away with being a unindicted co-conspirator. Maybe she has to please out.

@Deerwrecker2015 does a good job with the legal front happening to people. I will just add maybe Penthouse does not loose a bunch of money on her really dreadful "amateur" porn tape thanks she put out.

Yeah, Nancy Kerrigan will get a lot more sympathy ITTL, for starters...

And Tonya's career is deader than disco (even if she doesn't go to jail; ask OJ Simpson how popular he was after he was acquitted of murder)...

I think Tonya knew a lot more than she has let on. If Nancy was murdered there might be a lot more digging into her.

Here's another angle: What if they didn't start moving the Winter Olympics to a different even numbered year than the Summer Olympics that year? If the Winter Games are in 1996 instead, this may not have happened.

The funny thing about the snobbish rich girl bit about Nancy is that it wasn't true. She came from a fairly modest background. Her dad was a welder who worked another job at the ice rink in exchange for her lessons and her mom was a stay at home mom who is legally blind. The other thing is that while a lot of America saw her as a spoiled princess, in the world of figure skating where image is very important to the judges and they want someone who looks and acts the part of the ice princess, Nancy (in the eyes of the judges) could never quite shake the image of the tom boy who played hockey with her brothers and their friends on the local pond when it was frozen over.

Or, hell, maybe Shane Stant shoots her out in the parking lot of the Arena (where there are fewer people) or at her skating rink in Massachusetts. Regardless, they're not that smart...

They were bad liars indeed. If the body is easily found, what happens to these guys??? Tonya Harding is punished much harder than in OTL 1994.

@Zheng He I sort of new some of that, but thank you for the added details. Isn't she also from Connecticut? Of course all American's know that there are only rich people in Connecticut!

I don't know that much about figure skating and am not a fan, outside of watching the Winter Olympic games, which my Wife enjoys. I just think it is sad commentary, that a person can be viewed as having a not such great personality and have less sympathy for being a victim.

I mean I don't know the lady, I just got that opinion from the press. Didn't Nancy go on to marry a much older guy and have a couple of children? Sad really for all involved, Kerrigan got put into a spotlight she clearly didn't want. Harding got treated like white trash, and has had a tough going of it.

The bad thing is that the group she was involved with was "the gang who couldn't shoot straight". Those idiots could not break a leg or knee cap with a ASP (police baton). God knows what they would have done with a firearm. They probably would have killed a little girl and her family, by accident.

The bad thing is, would Harding not have made the team anyway? Maybe a interesting thing for a TL where her lace doesn't break, and she has the skate of her life.

I enjoyed this question, it was a bizarre if not a interesting time and a good point in my life, this takes me back to a trivial but fun time.

Nancy is not from Connecticut, she is from Stoneham, MA. I was living about five miles from there when the whole mess went down so I got to see plenty of news regarding the whole thing for months on end.

I think she ended up marrying her agent. I assume he is quite a bit older then her but they are still married and have three or four kids so I guess it worked out for them.
