WI: Japanese American war in 1907

So while doing research for a TL I'm doing about German-American rapprochement in the last decade of the 19th century and the first of the 20th I stumbled upon information that there was a war scare between the US and Japan in 1907 that most of the Europeans felt would lead to an American-Japanese war, both the British and the Germans placing 5 to 4 odds on a Japanese. So my question is do you agree with the Brits and the Germans on who would win? Why? What affects would this war have on the American people and American involvement in WWI? What is the political fallout in the war's aftermath?

I think at this point Japan is still bankrupt from the Russian-Japanese war, and America is coming into its own as a major industrial power. America should win the war.

However, any war will likely be perceived in America as an imperialistic venture. US politics stand to be significantly altered. It won't be like Russia in 1905, but socialists will oppose this war just as much as WWI.

Or at least someone more anti-Japanese, from what I hear TR was fairly pro-Japan.

I see a fairly inconclusive war; the US doesn't have the Panama Canal yet, and so they'd have to use much less than half of their total fleet against the entire Japanese fleet. The Japanese will likely have at least naval superiority, at least until the US decides to bring the Atlantic fleet around Tierra del Fuego.

The Japanese could maybe try to start a revolt against the US in the Philippines, but they will be hampered in their operations by their financial problems from the Russo-Japanese War.

This could be an incentive to try to finish the Panama Canal much faster.
