Say that for whatever reason, the US decides to invade Japan after nuking it twice. What would happen? Would Japan hold out, and for how long? Would the Soviets get involved?
I think that considering the USA only waited 3 days for Japan to surrender before dropping another nuke, they might've decided to go ahead with an invasion of the islands if Japan did not surrender as fast as it did. And considering that the Soviet Union was preparing to invade Hokkaido, the delay probably would've let them do so. If the US troops get bogged down in the south, Russia might reach Tokyo or farther even perhaps, and then we'd have Korea and Japan dominated by pro-soviet regimes.
plausible? how would the nukes affect the invasion? easier for Americans (japanese morale got crushed), or harder (radiation+fight to the death)?
