There was a History Channel special on this three years ago. Historians went
through Japanese records and discovered an astonishing fact. The Japanese,
like Germany and the United States, was developing an atomic bomb. They
even claimed to have tested in North Korea two weeks prior to the dropping
of Little Boy on Hiroshima. There's no independent confirmation of this. The
head of Japan's atomic bomb program was a Japanese physics professor, whose name I can't think of, maybe some of you can. However, in 1945, right
after the German surrender, a German U-boat was on its way Japan with two
Japanese officers, and a German crew. The German crew surrendered. The
two Japanese officers, on the other hand, committed suicide. On board the
U-boat, which was captured off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was several
pounds of uranium oxide. This was taken by the United States, and used in
the production of the of the Bomb, at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Background
now thoroughly established, what if Japan got the Bomb?
