Hello everyone, I am new to this board so please do not flame too hard. As an American that has at least some understanding of history (I know that is a rare combination), I have always wondered why the japanese did not call FDR's bluff.
If japan had announced to the world that it was joining its fellow Axis partners in the war with the Allies (still avoiding the war with the USSR) and attacked the DEI, Malaya and Australia, without attacking US holdings, I do not think FDR could have dragged America into this war. I do not see isolationist 1941 America saying: "well this is the last straw, we have to defnd the Dutch colonies in the East Indies!" How many American would have cared?
So my question is: what if Japan joins Germany's war against the Allies and America does not?
